چکیده

Electron transfers in photosynthesis and respiration commonly occur between protein-bound prosthetic groups that are separated by large molecular distances (often greater than 10 AÊ ). Although the electron donors and acceptors are expected to be weakly coupled, the reactions are remarkably fast and proceed with high speci®city. Tunneling timetables based on analyses of Fe/Cu to Ru electron-transfer rates for Ru-modi®ed heme and copper proteins reveal that the structure of the intervening polypeptide can control these distant donor±acceptor couplings. Multistep tunneling can account for the relatively rapid Cu to Re electron transfer observed in Re-modi®ed azurin.

Modeling and Simulation of a Molecular Single-Electron Transistor

In this paper, to understand the concept of coupling, molecule density of states that coupled to the metal electrodes will be explained then, based on this concept, a weak and strong coupling for the molecules attached to the metal electrodes will be described. Capacitance model is used to explore the connection of addition energy with the Electron affinity and the ionization energy of the mole...

Electron transfer between biological molecules by thermally activated tunneling.

A theory of electron transfer between two fixed sites by tunneling is developed. Vibronic coupling in the individual molecules produces an activation energy to transfer at high temperatures, and temperature-independent tunneling (when energetically allowed) at low temperature. The model is compared with known results on electron transfer in Chromatium and in Rhodopseudomonas spheroides. It quan...

Room Temperature Hydrogen Sensor Based on Single-Electron Tunneling Between Palladium Nanoparticles

In this paper, we present the results of single-electron tunneling in two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal closed packed arrays of palladium nanoparticles. After inspecting the emergence of Coulomb blockade phenomena, we demonstrate the possibilities of using these arrays as a single-electron tunneling based hydrogen sensor. We assumed arrays of palladium nanoparticles with diameters of 3.5 and 6...

Selective Bond Breaking of Single Iodobenzene Molecules with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope Tip

Controlled step-by-step dissociation of single iodobenzene molecules has been performed at Cu(111) step-edges using tunneling electrons from a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip at 12 K. We show that the threshold tunneling electron energies to break a single bond inside a polyatomic molecule can be determined by using I-V spectroscopy of single molecules. Electron energies of 1.5±0.1 eV a...

Tunneling rates in electron transport through double-barrier molecular junctions in a scanning tunneling microscope.

The scanning tunneling microscope enables atomic-scale measurements of electron transport through individual molecules. Copper phthalocyanine and magnesium porphine molecules adsorbed on a thin oxide film grown on the NiAl(110) surface were probed. The single-molecule junctions contained two tunneling barriers, vacuum gap, and oxide film. Differential conductance spectroscopy shows that electro...
